I've cursed it up and down, but I still use AVG free. It does have a few bugs, but once you know the easy workarounds I find it's a full featured program for anti spyware and anti virus.

Like any AV program, I always turn off real-time scanning. I scan on demand when needed and fire fox automatically hooks into AVG and scans all downloads for me.

I've only had a few infections because I am very careful, and when I did AVG found them and totally cleaned them in a few clicks, so I do find it useful.
