I run McAfee. It's (generally) unobtrusive and it has good protection.
The BEST antivirus is Kaspersky, but it's annoying as hell.

I personally use Trend Micro and have for the last 4 years. It updates nice and quietly, system scans don't take forever and it can be run in the background while you do something else with no noticeable performance problems. I have had no virus, malware or spyware problems since getting it 4 years ago.

NOD32 is very nice as well. It runs very smoothly, doesn't effect computer at all. While scanning, it has little effect on your computer speed. But yeah Kaspersky is probably the best, but I always thought it was slow as hell and lagged me.

I've cursed it up and down, but I still use AVG free. It does have a few bugs, but once you know the easy workarounds I find it's a full featured program for anti spyware and anti virus.
Like any AV program, I always turn off real-time scanning. I scan on demand when needed and fire fox automatically hooks into AVG and scans all downloads for me.
I've only had a few infections because I am very careful, and when I did AVG found them and totally cleaned them in a few clicks, so I do find it useful.

I tried Mcafee and it fuked my internet connection up for some reason. I'm somewhat knowledgeable of network connections, but everything I tried wouldn't fix it besides uninstalling it. I now run Kaspersky, which I actually like a lot, cause it is not intrusive IMO and works great.
Now on a side note, I'm having to reformat my PC which blows ass, as I have tons of software installed and have picked up an undetectable Virus according to Kaspersky. It's nasty too, as it tried to disable my AV by corrupting the database files, lagged my connection out, and keeps crashing windows. I managed to get the database files reupdated and ran a full scan, disconnected from the net, and it didn't find anything and my system crashed at the end of the scan. I hardly ever crash, so I have no idea what I've picked up and a reformat is the only way of fixing it I know of. I suppose it's a great way to get a nice clean start and get some crap off my system, but still sucks, cause I have SO much stuff to update and reinstall now.
