Yeah you need to OC by the bios. The new AMD software isn't to bad, but anything thats NOT from your processor's/Motherboard's company tends to have tons of bugs in it.
Also, NEVER, EVER flash the BIOS through software.. that will completely screw up your mobo, take it from someone who has done it.. lol
Especially dont try to flash an EVGA 780i's BIOS with the ASUS Flashing tool... that will end up with a BAD result.
(Yes, I did in fact try to do that...)

Well to be completely honest, I would spend the extra 10 bucks on a floppy drive. No joke, they are still the best way to flash a bios.
But if you don't want to go the extra way to get it, then yeah, flash drive is perfectly fine. Just make sure you have the right version of your bios and for the right product. If you flash your bios with one that isn't for yours, it will seriously mess things up, you'll have to get an entirely new BIOS chip or RMA your board.
I've done it twice with my 780i... yes, 2 times I have flashed the bios with a corrupt one, or with one that wasn't for my board.

Just a heads up, a lot of motherboard companies don't encourage/support the use of a flash drive and my company, we recommend to customers to use CD/Floppy ideally.
Less risky.
Cause if you bork the bios flash, then there is a high % chance you will kill your board.
Just some advice from someone that deals with these calls everyday
